Hi Folks!
First of all, on behalf of everyone who is working on behalf of St. Peters, we would like to very much thank everyone for all of their interest and support.
In the second half of September, 7 of us from the church visited the school (sponsored by the evangelical development office as “ecumenical learning trip”) and were able to get an overview of the situation there:
Good: The wall around the property is now finished. The project has long been a worry for us. The school is approaching the demands of the school commission in placing all the buildings constructed in the past two years within the property boundaries and now filling in the gaps. We were told that it has become much harder for mattresses or tables to be stolen!
The hospital rooms are ready (but not yet furnished). Another girl’s dormitory has been built and filled; another classroom is still in the early stages of construction (materials were reassigned to build the front wall to the school). Partners for these projects were the southern German Association LAP, as well as the Ugandan support group “Bagala Buganda”
The school has now hired a school nurse.
Take a look at the five studio quality recordings: St. Peter’s Songs and Videos, which we were happily surprised to find out about - you can find it on the blog: www.peters-kalule.blogspot.de
A neighbor has transferred the adjacent land to the school under the condition that it be used as a football field. There aren’t currently any funds for this available, but the land will be used in the meantime as a school garden.
There are also plans to place the first teacher apartments there. Take a look at our betterplace (crowdfunding-platform) for more information.https://www.betterplace.org/de/projects/34168-lehrerwohnungen-fur-die-st-peter-s-secondary-school-bombo-kalule/news/124193 Please share!
Some wonderful people have given us funds for small investments on site, with which we:
Bought materials for a chicken stall and chickens (200 euros)
Bought and planted 250 trees (eucalyptus and musisi, good for construction wood and good for draining the swampy adjacent land (200 euros).
Bought a foot-pedal sewing machine (besides the electric one already there, 200 euros). There is now a new seamstress offering regular sewing lessons
We financed a goulash meal for the entire school (300 euros) in addition to a dessert of sugar cane (20 euros). We had several people personally come to thank us for the meal! The school usually offers two meals a day with corn porridge and beans for lunch and dinner, while in the morning they can only offer hot water.
There are now 588 students! We pooled together 250 euros for purchasing the most urgent books.
Sometimes it can feel really good to spend money: someone once said – In Afrika you can make do with only a little money…
We were able to bring 7 used laptops with us using the 1000 euros provided to us from the GKR for the trip, in addition to the 300 euros someone additionally donated and another person financed the Kensington-locks (to secure the computers to the desk legs).
We had some nice workshops: recorder, music stories with audio examples, installing the laptops, drawing student portraits, games, arts and crafts, interviews, sewing, impromptu art to the beatitudes, group discussions stimulated by Taize…
We had the opportunity to visit the village and were guests at a traditional wedding
We were able to get an overview of some of the extra-curricular projects offered by the school: contests in drumming and dancing (including week’s long preparation and practice), debating contest, and a sports tournament.
We celebrated a lovely church service together.
We had a good meeting at the German Embassy and were encouraged to apply there as well for their program.
We visited the Radio/TV channel of Kabaka (King of the Baganda) CBS 88,8 and were pulled right into the studio to go on live! The station is proud of the school, since Ronald Mulondo won the land on which the school is built through their 2009 Radio/TV-Quiz! The advertisement of the station helped the school get their first paying students, the road to financial independence.
We would like to wish everyone a wonderful season of advent, Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year 2016!
With a Happy Heart,
Irene Jacobsen and Damaris Nimz
(on behalf of the AG Uganda)
